Beginner's buying guide : Makeup kit

By Unknown - May 30, 2014

A few of my friends have asked me what makeup I would suggest they get as they have never worn makeup before.  So, I thought I would do a post of essentials for your first makeup kit! I'm going to try and keep this to cheaper products just because if you have never worn makeup before you really need to try things out and see what you like and feel comfortable wearing. Its a bit of a trial process and so most people won't want to waste the money.

First of all you need to ask your self "what look am i going for ?" ( Most people for their first makeup kit just want  natural makeup for everyday use. ) and  "what are the areas am i concerned about? " (Whether that's covering redness and blemishes or just wanting a bit of makeup) Remember wearing makeup should only enhance your features.

1) THE BASE- ( remember foundation is mainly to make the face an even tone , concealers are for concealing spots and dark circles , if you want your foundation to cover more look for a higher coverage foundation)

If you don't want to wear a foundation or concealer then don't; only apply things to your face that you want ( it is your face after all!) You can skip this step! Again if you are young with good skin that's not problematic then please skip this step , most people would kill to have amazing skin and not feel the need to wear foundation!

Now this step is kind of tricky because foundations and other base products are for certain types of skin (oily, dry, and normal to combination) and when i have asked friends "well what type of skin are you?" they have no idea. Really i didn't even notice until i started wearing a foundation. If your lucky you will pick up a foundation that will suit your skin perfectly first time but there is that possibility that you pick up a foundation that is for dry skin and you find out you have oily skin because you end up looking greasy or  the other way round. So i would recommend not spending lots on your first foundation! But I would recommend buying a BB cream for first time makeup wearers! Its not going to feel too heavy on the skin and will probably give about the right coverage. Try Maybelline's BB cream .
I'm thinking about doing a post about buying a foundation in more depth for drugstores and high end counters soon so if you would like to see that then please like this post and comment below!

Next is concealer -  If you are looking to cover spots then you need a concealer shade matching your foundation shade. If you are looking for concealing dark under eye circles then you can use a corrector shade that will have a pink under tone to it or go a few shades lighter with your concealer which will illuminate and highlight around your eyes. Try http://www.superdrug.com/face-make-up/lasting-perfection-concealer-dark/invt/870559&bklist=

Powder- I would recommend using podwer just to set your makeup either make sure the powder is the right shade for you , this can add extra coverage, or just go for a translucent powder! Try Rimmel or SOAP AND GlORY

FACE
If your just starting out then i  personally would choose between a blush or a bronzer otherwise it could end up looking too much!
When looking for a bronzer make sure there isn't an orange undertone to it - try Bourjois
When looking for a blush try different colours on the back of your hand to see what looks nice and compliments your skin tone , also try powders and creams to see what texture you like! try - Sleek

EYES
Mascara- You can't really go wrong with mascara , you just need to decide whether you want waterproof and what shade ( great alternatives to black are clear and brown!)

IF you want an eyeliner i would go for a pencil just because they are so easy and simple to use and can be used in the waterline as well as the lash line! You can go for brown if you are scared to use black!

Again, if you want eye shadows then I would go for browns and natural colours , these will suit every eye colour and still look natural. when buying eye shadows swatch the testers to check the colour pay-off !

BRUSHES - you need to apply your makeup with something!  i would recommend The real technique brushes they are inexpensive and great quality http://www.superdrug.com/search?q=realtechniques&searchsubmit=Search
